we met at

collected a
ton of toys
that the
Marine’s
picked up
that night.
We also held
a raffle
that raised
an
additional
$400 that
was donated
to Toys For
Tots. The
raffle
prizes
included
admission to
Pleasure
Island,
tickets to
the Petty
Driving
Experience,
an
autographed
Tom Brady
Superbowl
football,
and a 2
night stay
at the Hard
Rock Hotel
and Casino
in Tampa.
Although
we had a
much smaller
turnout than
we had hoped
for, it was
a successful
event
nevertheless. |

No, we didn't let the threat of hurricanes deter us from our annual Florida college football program. However, it did deter most of you! On Tuesday, September 7th, we held our luncheon with representatives from the Miami Hurricanes, FSU Seminoles, and the UCF Knights.
First up we heard from Kevin Carmody, from the Seminole booster club. Kevin has been attending this meeting now for several years. He picked the Noles to contend for the national championship.
Next up was Mona Atkinson, from the Canes booster club. Mona has also been attending this meeting for several years. Mona thought she wasn't going to be able to attend the meeting this year, since the Miami-FSU game was schedule for the night before the meeting. However, thanks (?) to hurricane Frances, the game was moved and Mona was able to attend. She had made a couple of predictions, one envelope for if Miami lost to FSU ("We suck") and one for if they won. We now know that she didn't need the losing prediction.
Last up was Gert Garman, the sports marketing director for UCF. Gert brought along Coach O'Leary (well, a life-size standup of him). Although Gert didn't make predictions of UCF contending for a national championship this year (she said to give Coach O'Leary 3 or 4 years), she is expecting an exciting season.
At the meeting, the club also voted to send $100 donations to support the hurricane relief efforts to both the Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

On May 4th, 30 brothers and guests were treated to an exception recent history talk. Richard Lowry is a military historian and an eleventh-generation American whose ancestry dates back to Connecticut in the early 1600s.
He proudly served aboard the USS Ulysses S. Grant during the Vietnam War. Later, his career led him to participate in the development of products such as the Apache Helicopter's Night Vision System which was utilized throughout Desert Storm.
His insatiable thirst for accurate information surrounding the events of Desert Storm spawned a twelve-year research project, the product of which is a meticulously-detailed recounting of each event of the Gulf War, the Gulf War Chronicles.

On April 6th, John Fareed spoke to us on "Building Your Personal Brand". John is a senior vice president at YPB&R in Orlando. He is a hospitality marketing expert, and a frequent guest lecturer at some of the world's best hotel schools including Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration in Ithaca, New York; the Dublin Institute of Technology's School of Hospitality Management and Tourism in Dublin, Ireland; and the Institut de Management HÙtelier International (IMHI) at the …cole SupÈrieure des Sciences EconomÌques et Commerciales (ESSEC), one of Europe's preeminent business schools, in Paris, France. John helps hoteliers around the world as they struggle to reinvent themselves for the customer-service economy.
At our meeting John spoke to us about how your image, i.e. your personal brand, often dictates your success (or lack thereof) in life. He explained how he has reinvented his own personal brand several times in his life, moving from a Marine, to a professional magican, and now one of the top experts in hosppitality marketing.

On March 2nd we had 27 bothers and guests attend our luncheon. Everyone was there to hear what Frank Billingsly, the Executive Director for the Downtown Development Board, had to say. Frank and his assistant, Sandy Crump, presented us with a little bit of history and the board's vision for the future. They have just finished up working on Downtown Outlook -- the 20 year downtown plan.
Frank then gave us an overview of some of the large (and small) housing projects in development. As I write this, today's Orlando Sentinel (March 9th) has an article on the new 35 story condo tower "The Vue at Lake Eola". Since 1999, a residential renaissance has been occurring in downtown. There are now hundreds of apartments and more than 1,500 condominiums being marketed, built, or planned. There are currently 5 other condo towers in various stages of work in downtown.

Since President's Day is in February, it was appropriate that our topic this month was Abraham Lincoln. Chuck Southworth, an avid Lincoln buff, was our guest speaker. Chuck has been interested in Lincoln since childhood. He has studied and collected Lincoln memorabilia for most of his life. He has a whole room in his home dedicated to his collection. He brought along a few pieces from his collection to share with us, including presidential campaign buttons, coins, and even a Lincoln death mask that was copied from the original. Chuck explained that the death masks were a common thing to do prior to the popularity of photographs.
Chuck touched on various aspects of Lincoln's life, but focused on his leadership ability. Chuck said that Lincoln lived by the creed "responsibility precedes privilege". Lincoln faced may obstacles in his life, including his height (he was 6' 4", which given average height increases, would equate to 7' today), problems with Union generals during the Civil War, and his uneasiness around women. Some speculate that Lincoln's size was due to Marfan syndrome, which can cause a person to have extra long limbs, figers, and toes.

On Tuesday January 6th our guest speaker was Russell Hauck, the Executive Director for the National Center for Simulation. Russ has over 23 years in simulation experience in Orlando. He is a graduate of the Navy academy. He is also currently the Mayor of Altamonte Springs, Florida.
The National Center forw Simulation (NCS) was formed in 1993 as the link among the defense industry, government, and academia on behalf of the entire simulation, training, and modeling community. Its mission is to facilitate networking among its growing local, national, and international membership and potential partners and customers in government, industry, education, and commerce.
As a forum, showcase, advocate and archive for simulation, training, and modeling knowledge and resources, NCS works to strengthen the simulation community's synergy, foster innovation, and tell the story of modeling, simulation, and training to decision makers and the general public. NCS members actively create an environment where collective efforts result in new awareness and applications for military readiness, space exploration, health care, transportation, education, entertainment, and technology development.
NCS is headquartered in Orlando, Florida home of the Simulation Center of Excellence and more than 180+ modeling, simulation and training companies, the University of Central Florida, and two military simulation and training commands. |
